FUNDRAISING FOR NEW "RITE OF SPRING"

The Ballet Collective/ LA is celebrating it's 10th anniversary under the direction of founder John Castagna. Since 2008, the company has been presenting choreography on the Internet and has been nominated twice by Dance Magazine for “Video of the Month” and once by Pointe Magazine for “Video of the Month”. The repertoire include such classics as A Midsummer Night's Dream , La Traviata , and Die Fledermaus , as well as contemporary works Dawn to Dusk and Spaces Between . None of this would have been possible without the continued generous support of donors like you. Every time I rehearse with young dancers or review our repertoire, I am so grateful for your generosity.

For the 2011 season I will be presenting Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring in collaboration with Costume designer Anda Bernovska (our third collaboration) and our amazing friend and colleague Bridget Murnane* will create the video (see her bio below). Focusing on the four main characters we will be reinterpreting The Rite into a quartet for four principal dancers , 2 women and 2 men. Inspired
by Jose Limon's The Moor's Pavane , we will streamline the story seeking the essence of the work. The movement will be a fusion of contemporary ballet and a reference to the off-center and floor work of traditional modern dance . Of course, Nijinsky 's original version of The Rite of Spring, in 1913, will always be an creative source.

The story behind The Rite of Spring sprang from a dream that composer Stravinsky had of a young maiden who
is sacrificed, by dancing herself to death, to ensure that spring would come and once more replenish the earth. The four main characters are: The Chosen Maiden (Stephanie Kim), Igor, the musician - representing composer Igor Stravinsky (Damien Diaz), The Witch (Gaida Paulovska) The Elder (Micah Moeh). The music selections will be 18 minutes (edited by professional sound editor Danny Simon) The Rite of Spring Quartet is planned to go into production August- September 2011 with a professional video shoot in the fall incorporating green screen technique. This will allow us to add a background montage of photo images of wild flowers, redwood forest and night bonfires by Alvaro Asturias and Frank Letcher (an in-kind donation) to the video. Thanks to a generous donation by Miriam Jencks the costumes have already been commissioned and created.

NOW we need to raise the funds to continue with the production costs of dancers' fees, theatre rental, video editing. Ballet Collective/ LA needs your HELP. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. We can't do this without your support. Ballet Collective is a not-for-profit 501©3 organization, our Federal tax ID# 20-1466858 We are planning a performance of The Rite of Spring Quartet plus a screening of our most recent ballets which you will be cordially invited to attend as our guests, TBA.

Special thanks to Mimoda Studio and Stefan Wenta for their ongoing support. Check our website at www.balletcollective.org and Facebook to view costume sketches and photos selected for the green screen montage.

The 2010/2011 season is providing an exciting time for the company.  Their latest collaboration Spaces Between is up for Dance Magazine's "Video of the Month", Ballet Collective/LA's third nomination on dancemedia.com.  In this new abstract ballet the dancers represent the four elements of Water, Fire, Air and Earth that make up the material universe.  They attract, repel and even shake the very ground that we walk upon.  Each is dependent on the other for the flow of life creating a harmonious balance.   The company is very excited to be able to work with such talented dancers Stephanie Kim (Water), tian
Tan (fire), Sadie Black (Air) and Damien Diaz (Earth).  Upcoming
performances of Spaces Between to be announced.

The Ballet Collective also received 3 Lester Horton Award nominations for their production of VIOLETTA and ALFREDO, a dance version of Verdi's La Traviata. This work won a nomination by Pointe Magazine for "Video of the Month" for September 2008. Dancing in the work were guest artists Aubrey Morgan (NYCB alumni) and Sergey Kheylik (winner of gold at Varna 2002).

Your support has been crucial to creating works that can be viewed on the Internet developing Ballet Collective's national exposure.  Your contributions support dancers fees, music commissions, quality video documentation, costume design and more.

Plans for the upcoming year include a new commissioned score from Mark Mercury with new dances choreographed by John Castagna. Please help us with a donation in any amount you can.

Mark Mercury's music can be heard on   www.markmercury.com

"VIOLETTA and ALFREDO" is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors though the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
